Local Law Enforcement and Early Learning Programs Join Forces to Promote Literacy
Last month, the ELCOC and the Orlando Police Department (OPD) launched a new initiative called “Books and Badges” . Each month, a uniformed officer visits an Orange County early childhood education program to read books about safety and community.
More than 30 officers are on the “Books and Badges” roster lead by OPD Chief, John Mina, who kicked off the program by reading with a VPK class at Early Education Station on Mercy Drive. “Reading to young children is not only one of the best activities to stimulate language, but it is also fun,” said Chief Mina. “Our officers will have a great time not only sharing their love of reading but also their love of service.”
