LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM

CITY OF ORLANDO/AMERICAN RED CROSS

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTION

NOVICE TO ADVANCED

Infant Level: 6-18 months Toddler Level: 18-36 months Preschool Level: 3-5 years

IPAP helps young children age six months to five years become comfortable in and around the water so they can learn to swim. The program gives parents information and techniques to help orient their children to the water and to supervise water activities in a safe manner. Parent/Adult accompaniment in the water is required for Infant and Toddler Levels. Preschool Level children will be taught age appropriate basic swimming and safety skills.

(YOUTH 6-17 YEARS)

LEVEL I: Introduction to Water Skills: Introduces students to the water to feel comfortable and enjoy the water safely.

LEVEL II: Fundamental Aquatics Skills: This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills and adds to the self-help and basic rescue skills started in Level I.

LEVEL III: Stroke Development: Front and back crawl strokes are developed and the fundamentals of treading water is introduced.

LEVEL IV: Stroke Improvement: Level IV develops confidence in the strokes learned thus far and improves on other aquatic skills such as breaststroke, elementary backstroke, butterfly, and open turns.

LEVEL V: Stroke Refinement: Level V is coordination and refinement of key strokes. Introduction of flip turns, sidestroke and rescue breathing.

LEVEL VI: Swimming and Skill Proficiency: Level VI is designed with four component options: Personal Water Safety, Lifeguard Readiness, Fundamentals of Diving and Fitness Swimming.

JR. LIFEGUARDING: For kids ages 11-14 to get a jump start into a lifeguarding job and provides a foundation of lifeguarding and life skills. For those with swimming skills at Level V or above. An ideal transition between the Learn to Swim program and the Lifeguard.
